Are you living in bear country??

You may have watched the graphic video of the man attacked not once but twice by a grizzly bear this week.

He says in the video “life sucks in bear country”.

In bear country you should be on high alert and during those times your “fight or flight mode” kicks in.

This is the body in a survival state… a state of stress.

When you are in this stress state you will have heightened senses from hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

In the short term, this is great. You may notice the bear before it notices you or it may save your life like this gentleman when the bear attacks. (Yes it’s called fight or flight for a reason)

This response is normal and when the threat (stress) goes away you go back to a relaxed state.

For most of us in the hustle of everyday life we stay in this heightened state of stress, ie. survival mode.  Even though we don’t live in “bear country” it’s like there is a bear in our back seat when we are commuting to and from work every day.

In your survival state your body will down regulate systems like digestion, reproduction, and immunity.

fight-or-flight-2

Are you surviving or are you thriving?

Stress can come in many different forms;

Emotional – work deadlines, rush hour, family troubles, finances, public speaking.

Chemical –  processed foods, tobacco, alcohol, chemicals in our water.

Physical – poor posture, chronic injuries like arthritis, trauma, over training

You can quit or you can adapt.

You have two choices to deal with your stress.

  1. Stop doing everything that causes stress.
  2. Make your body more adaptable to the stress.

For 99.9% of people the only real option is #2.

Corrective chiropractic care helps to move your spine back towards an optimal position and take pressure off your nervous system, the very thing that coordinates the fight or flight response.

Lowered pressure on the spine and nervous system will allow your body to function better, and improve your body’s ability to cope with the stress of everyday life.

This along with some minor changes to your lifestyle can pay huge dividends in your future health.  Something we see every day in the clinic.

Stay happy, stay heathy and stay out of bear country!
